As a Man Thinketh by James Allen

I came across this book while reading How to Make Shit Happen by Sean Whalen.

“As a man thinketh in his heart so is he.”

James Allen uses the metaphor of a garden as the mind. Planting seeds of good thoughts bare good fruit as does bad thoughts bare bad fruit. Also, neglecting the garden of the mind will grow an abundance of useless weeds.

“The outer conditions of a person’s life will always be found to be harmoniously related to his inner state.” (page 5)

The repetitiveness of any thought will solidify into existence in the outer environment. Habits are just a repeated pattern of thought and action. Practice, patience, and persistence of doing your best in every situation backed with purpose is freedom.

Freedom from the self-imposed hell we put ourselves in.

In every situation there are both corrupt and beautiful thoughts to be stroked. “As a man thinketh in his heart so is he.”

Understand the corrupt thoughts:

  1. Bestial (Brutal)
  2. Impure
  3. Fear/Doubt/Indecision
  4. Lazy
  5. Hateful/Condemnatory
  6. Selfish

Understand the beautiful thoughts:

  1. Pure
  2. Courage/Self-Reliance/Decision
  3. Energetic
  4. Gentle/Forgiving
  5. Loving/Unselfish

“Good thoughts and actions can never produce bad results; bad thoughts and actions can never produce good results.” (page 12)

Practice, Practice, Practice.

What happens when you buy a new car? You start to see that car more often. The same thing happens with everything we think of.

Have the courage to do what you fear and fear becomes a guide.

Surround yourself with people you want to become and you will become the people you surround yourself with.

The body is just the vessel for the mind, when the garden of the mind is rid of weeds and bad fruit the body will take care of itself. You will realize that the body is just an extension of the mind and the mind an extension of the body.

For the next 7 days take notice of your thoughts, are they corrupt or beautiful. Take a couple minutes a day to observe your thoughts. In the beginning there may be a lot of cleaning of the garden to be done, but through time you will create your own garden of eden (paradise).
